Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
