The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
